What the research says: Medical studies on ear reflexology

Auricular therapy, also known as ear reflexology or ear seeding, is an ancient healing technique with roots dating back thousands of years. It has long been a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where the ear is viewed as a microsystem of the entire body. Historical records suggest that forms of ear stimulation were used as early as 500 BC in China, and references can also be found in ancient Egyptian and Greek texts.

Today, this time-honoured approach is gaining renewed attention as modern studies confirm its potential benefits.

In summary, ear reflexology has been shown to help with the following - scroll down to read more details of the studies:

  • Menopause symptoms
  • Stress
  • Anxiety and burnout
  • Pain management
  • Sleep quality
  • Weight loss

Menopause symptoms

The Effects of Auricular Acupressure on Menopausal Symptoms, Stress, and Sleep in Postmenopausal Middle-Aged Women: A Randomized Single-Blind Sham-Controlled Trial

Conclusions: This study demonstrated that auricular acupressure is effective in improving menopause symptoms, stress, and sleep in postmenopausal middle-aged women. Therefore, auricular acupressure may be a useful nonpharmacologic intervention for alleviating these symptoms in this population.

Effect of Auricular Acupressure on Quality of Life in Postmenopausal Women: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Conclusions: A significant difference was observed in the average scores of the components and the total score of the quality of life of postmenopausal women in the intervention group, compared to the two control groups. Therefore, based on the results of this research, ear acupressure can play an important role in the management of menopause complications. Ear acupressure has been able to increase the depth of sleep, serotonin level, and sleep duration, as well as reduce the cortisol level and the level of fatigue and improve the quality of sleep in general. Ear acupressure reduced 46% of severe pain and ore than 50% of moderate back pain. Auriculotherapy can also reduce anxiety, intensity, and frequency of hot flashes, and quality of life in menopausal women.

Stress

Effect of Auriculotherapy on Stress: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Conclusions: The findings underscore auriculotherapy's efficacy in reducing stress in adults, advocating for its integration into nursing curriculums as a viable clinical intervention for stress management. Promoting its application in clinical environments could complement holistic, patient-centric care paradigms.

Anxiety and burnout

Auricular Acupressure Reduces Anxiety and Burnout in Behavioral Healthcare

Conclusions: This study evaluated the effectiveness of auricular acupressure on reducing anxiety and burnout among behavioral healthcare providers. Participants who received auricular acupressure reported significant reductions in anxiety levels and burnout symptoms compared to the control group. The study concluded that auricular acupressure could be a simple and effective method to alleviate stress and prevent burnout in healthcare professionals.

Pain management

Efficacy of Auricular Therapy for Pain Management: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Conclusions: Auricular therapy can be used as an adjunct therapy for pain management and, therefore, reduce analgesic use to minimise potential adverse effects and tolerance.

Sleep quality

The Effect of Auriculotherapy on Improving Sleep Quality in Postmenopausal Women Aged 45-60 years: A Clinical Trial Study

Conclusions: Participants who received auriculotherapy experienced significant improvements in various aspects of sleep, including mental quality, sleep duration, and sleep efficiency.

Effect of Auriculotherapy on Anxiety-Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances in Cancer Patients: A Scoping Review

Conclusions: The findings highlight the effectiveness of auriculotherapy in managing anxiety, fatigue, and sleep disturbances in cancer patients, demonstrating symptom improvement and benefits that outweigh the minor side effects associated with the procedure. The studies indicated a reduction in anxiety and fatigue and an enhancement in sleep quality. Furthermore, it proves effective for both patients in the early stages of the disease and those receiving palliative or end-of-life care.

Weight loss

Auricular Acupressure for Overweight and Obese Individuals: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Conclusions: The study results indicate that auricular acupressure is effective for weight reduction. Auricular acupressure alone, or with diet and/or exercise, was effective for weight reduction, particularly for decreasing body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), body fat mass (BFM), and body fat percentage (BFP), compared with no treatment, sham treatment, or use of surgical tape with diet and/or exercise. However, there was no effect on hip circumference. A 12-week acupressure intervention was associated with a larger effect on lowering BW and BMI compared with 4-, 6-, and 8-week interventions.
